Learn about Indigenous food sovereignty movements, their origins, and purpose

Food sovereignty, or people’s right to define their own strategies for the production, distribution, and consumption of food, has only become more known in recent years. Specifically, Indigenous food sovereignty movements began at Lake Atitlán in Panajachel, Guatemala, where in 2002 Indigenous groups from 28 countries met to write a declaration of the right of food. Today, many Native Americans are working towards reclaiming their indigenous ingredients and educating others about their importance in order to "rebuild relationships through sharing the stories of our seeds, our foods."
